Why was Spider-Man created?

Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He debuted in August 1962 in the 15th issue of the Amazing Fantasy anthology. His creation broke the norms of the time by presenting a teenage and orphaned superhero with everyday problems, economic insecurity, and loneliness, rather than a perfect adult or eternal subordinate.

Origin and Creation (1962)

  • The authors: Written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko.
  • The concept: It emerged because Stan Lee wanted a human hero with flaws that young readers could imitate or feel close to. At first, editor Martin Goodman doubted the idea, arguing that people did not like spiders, but the overwhelming success of the first issue forced him to give Spider-Man his own series (The Amazing Spider-Man).
  • The trigger: Peter Parker gets powers from a radioactive spider. Due to arrogance, he lets a thief escape who later assassinates his beloved Uncle Ben. From this, his ultimate rule is born: "With great power comes great responsibility".

Major Comic Book Stories

  • The classic trilogy of the 60s: Stories like "If This Be My Destiny..." (where he gets trapped under heavy machinery) defined his unrelenting will.
  • The death of Gwen Stacy (1973): Issue 121 of Amazing Spider-Man marked the end of the innocent era of the comic when the Green Goblin causes Gwen's fall and death, changing the tone of the stories to a darker one.
  • Kraven's last hunt (1987): A dark and psychological masterpiece where the villain buries Spider-Man alive to prove he is better than him.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man (2000): The modern reinvention written by Brian Michael Bendis.
  • Spider-Verse (2014): The saga written by Dan Slott that brought together versions of the web-slinger from alternate dimensions (Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, etc.).
